Objective
Deliver a leak free plant on-time and on-budget after scheduled shut-down maintenance activity.

The Project
Locate, identify, quantify, report and risk assess process gas leaks prior to the shut-down.
Fix leaks during the shut-down.
Find and fix maintenance induced leaks during start-up.

Key Results
-
Quickly, safely and cost effectively locate process gas leaks well before the shut work scope freeze date.
-
Include high risk leaks in the shut-down work scope.
-
Verify the integrity of leaks remediated during the shut-down.
-
Identify and fix maintenance induced process leaks prior to start-up & hand over.
-
Minimise gas leak risk.
-
Save overall labour (cost) and reduce leak detection duration (time) using experienced leak detection personnel and dedicated technology.
-
Saved time and cost by expediting conventional Nitrogen ”snoop” leak checks.
-
Expedite start-ups by quickly finding and fixing very low pressure leaks early in the inspection and test plan (ITP)
-
Significantly reduce Nitrogen gas generation and consumption over the staged pressurisation verification and purging start-up sequence.
Key Challenges
Hazardous atmosphere
-
Potential for explosive gas leaks.
-
Potential for Hydrogen sulphide gas leaks.
Hazardous work areas
-
Working in proximity to Hot or Cold Surfaces
-
Working at Height
-
Live process equipment
-
High pressures
-
Potential leak points located in restricted or confined spaces
-
Noisy environment
Leak Detection and Quantification
-
Process / Raw (Methane) gas is invisible
-
High noise environment can mask audible leaks
-
Accurate gas loss quantification is challenging because methane leaks are highly buoyant and disperse quickly
AISS Survey Solution
Optical Gas Imaging
-
We deployed medium wave cooled infrared optical gas imaging sensors to locate and visualise hydrocarbon process gas leaks.
Ultrasonic Leak Detection
-
We deployed intrinsically safe ultrasonic scanning sensors to locate and validate ultrasound signatures from low and high pressure gas leaks that are otherwise masked by process plant equipment noise.
Thermo Volumetric Analysis
-
We deployed portable intrinsically safe thermo volumetric analysers to validate and quantify hydrocarbon process gas leaks in ppm equivalent Methane.
Risk Management
-
Deploy intrinsically safe survey equipment where possible.
-
Use Optical Gas Imaging to see and avoid potentially hazardous process gas emissions.
-
Develop and follow comprehensive job risk assessment (JRA's) .
Value Added
Start-up risk minimisation
-
Non-shutdown work related leaks were detected while performing ultrasonic scanning surveys of targeted potential leak sources during the Nitrogen purge phase and the initial low pressure hydrocarbon introduction phase.
-
Optical Gas Imaging surveys of known and potential leak points during hydrocarbon introduction provided additional assurance that the ultrasonic survey during the nitrogen purge phase was effective.
Reporting & Data Visualisation
-
Marked-up conventional 2-D images, video and 360 Degree panoramic SiteView scenes of leak locations provided contextually rich scene information to facilitate leak risk assessment and repair action prioritisation.
-
360 Degree panoramic SiteView scenes covering the entire plant provided a visual reference for all personnel when developing leak remediation work scopes.
